Nicholas ignored his brother’s question. Too worried to give an answer he already knew. With the depth of corruption that had sunk into their father’s way of ruling and how they had both been out of the main circles of the castle for three years as had their cousin.

They’d never thought until now, when their father was so desperate to catch the spy, that he would sacrifice his own children and there was no way of knowing who they could trust.

“Nicholas, seriously you can’t expect Camden of all people to not be on our side.” His brother’s surprise was written in the frown on his face and the pained twist of his mouth though that could also be the wound making itself known.

He ignored the question again while crossing the cold cavern hidden in the depths of the mountain castle. Grabbing Nicholas grabbed two full duffel bags; one for himself and another for Micheal. He left behind several bags tucked into carefully created places to stash anything he could need if he were to go on the run from any enemies in the palace. Heart aching at the sight of several other bags he’d filled upon his return home that weren’t needed as only Micheal was targeted yet the fact that only the two of them were leaving was a relief.

“Come on, we have to go.” He said swinging the bags over his shoulder, pulling Micheal up, and getting his shoulder over his own to give support as they went in the direction of an exit Nicholas had stashed an old car in when he’d come home from the battlefields of a physical war only to see a silent manipulative mental war ongoing in the layers of his government – battles fought in hiding and in the open with each player pulling in their own ways leaving behind chaos.

“We’ve got about half a mile more.” He said when Micheal gave a sharp inhale of pain.

“Hmm, good, that’s good,” was the quiet response moments later. “Plan?”

Nicholas shifted his hold on the bags, giving more support to his brother. “Got a hotel that I’ve used as a safe house in the past, not much, but I expect Father will keep the news quiet as long as possible which gives us a day without worrying that the media will have the information, we’re good for tonight. Tomorrow, we’ll be out of the country.”

“You’ve really thought this through... I’m concerned by the insight you have into this situation.” Nicholas barely held back a bitter chuckle at the thought of the reaction Micheal would have if he were to know the whole truth of the matter and the things he’d done in the name of loyalty.

In the name of the crown.

All for a monarch–his own father by blood–who had stolen his ability to trust with his manipulative choices.

They left the dark tunnel and came into the bright light of day.
